The Burin and the Setting Graver: One Wedge, Two Trades

How the engraver's burin and the jeweller's setting graver share a cutting geometry, why each lifts a burr, and where the two tools stop being interchangeable.

A burin and a setting graver are the same idea in two sizes: a hardened steel wedge, ground to a face angle and relieved behind the edge with a heel, pushed through metal by hand. Both remove a chip and both push a burr up along the cut. What separates them is not the geometry of the point but the material under it, the depth of the cut, and what happens to the burr afterwards.

The engraver's tool is the older and the more specialised of the two. A burin is a short bar of high-carbon steel, square or lozenge in section, mounted in a mushroom-shaped handle that sits in the palm. The point is cut off at an oblique angle, so the tool presents a V-shaped edge rather than a knife edge. That V is the whole design: it ploughs a clean, tapered line of even width through a copper plate, and it throws the displaced metal up on one side of the groove as a burr. The engraver does not chase that burr away. On a copper plate the burr is part of the printed line, a slight roughness that holds ink and prints as a soft, dark edge. It is removed only when the plate is scraped and burnished before printing, and even then the decision is deliberate.

The point to carry over here is that the burr is not a defect in engraving. It is a by-product the engraver reads.

What is a burin shaped like in section?

Square, lozenge or triangular, depending on the line wanted. A square-section burin gives two parallel sides and a flat bottom, useful for wide, even lines. A lozenge burin, ground on all four faces, is the general-purpose point for lettering and fine hatching. A triangular or knife-edge burin is reserved for very fine work and for curved lines, because it steers more easily under the hand.

The cutting end is ground in two stages. First the face, the angled flat that meets the metal. Then the heel, a small secondary bevel behind the face that lifts the back of the tool clear of the work. Without a heel, the burin would rub, chatter and dig in. With it, the tool rides at a controlled angle and the cut stays shallow enough to steer.

Why does an engraver lift a burr on a copper plate?

Because copper is soft enough to move rather than shear. The burin does not slice the metal away cleanly the way a knife cuts wood. It compresses and displaces it, and the displaced metal has to go somewhere. It goes up along the wall of the groove as a raised lip.

That lip matters twice. While cutting, it tells the engraver how deep the tool has gone and whether the line is running true. At printing, it holds extra ink and prints as a slightly blurred, darker edge, which is one of the visual signatures of hand engraving. A plate that has been scraped flat and burnished prints a hard, thin line; a plate that keeps some burr prints a warmer one. Engravers use both, sometimes on the same plate.

What changes when the same wedge cuts a bezel instead of a plate?

The metal changes, and with it the whole purpose of the cut. A bezel is usually gold, platinum or silver, and it is not being cut to hold ink. It is being cut to raise a seat, open a channel, brighten a facet or lift a bead over a stone. The graver still throws a burr, but that burr is now a problem: it sits on a surface that will be polished, worn against skin, and inspected under a loupe.

So the jeweller's graver is ground differently. The face angle is steeper, because gold and platinum are harder and more prone to skating than copper. The heel is shorter and sharper, because the cuts are shallow and the tool must turn tightly around a curve. The point is often a square graver for bright cuts, an onglette for outlining, or a flat for clearing a channel. And the burr is removed as a matter of course, with a scraper, a burnisher or a fine file, before the setting is finished.

Where does a setting graver stop and a scorper begin?

At the size of the chip and the shape of the point. A scorper is a heavier tool with a broader, often curved or flat cutting end, used to clear metal away in bulk: opening a channel, cutting a seat, removing a large burr. It is a shaping tool. A setting graver is a finishing tool, ground fine, used to raise beads, brighten a facet and tighten a stone.

The two sit on the same bench and are often made from the same steel, but they are not interchangeable. Push a scorper where a graver belongs and the cut is too wide to close. Push a graver where a scorper belongs and the tool will chatter, or snap at the point.

Where the two tools stop being interchangeable

The geometry travels. A wedge with a face and a heel cuts metal whether the metal is a copper plate or a gold bezel. What does not travel is the tolerance. An engraver works to a line that will be inked and printed, and a little burr is acceptable, even useful. A setter works to a surface that will be polished and worn, and a burr is a fault to be removed.

That difference sets the grinding. Plate engraving favours a shallower face angle and a longer heel, because the tool must travel far and steer slowly through soft metal. Setting favours a steeper face and a shorter heel, because the tool must turn tightly and cut cleanly in hard metal. The handle changes too: the burin's mushroom sits in the palm and is pushed by the shoulder, while the graver is held closer to the work, often with a palm rest or a handpiece, and controlled by the fingers.

A bench can hold both. The mistake is to treat one as a substitute for the other because the points look alike under a loupe. They are the same wedge doing two different jobs, and the job decides the grind.
